Hi, Do not get a cheap heat press full stop. I have been doing sublimation now on mousemats and other media for 3 years. I got my first heat press from ebay for around £280 new. It is ok for this sort of stuff but as soon as I got into the t shirt market, I had all sorts of problems with burn marks on T shirts, Transfers not taking.

A hat press is a possibility, although you would be limiting yourself to just small items if you got that. Hotronix makes an 11X15 inch press. I think that's the smallest i have seen. The National heat press was not a Hix re branded. I would just remove as much as possible of the coating, however, I don't think that it should cause a temperature variation. Are you using a heat gun to test the temperature? The older machines had individual heat coils and a failure in one or more could be causing the problem.
